Tuina (Therapeutic Massage)

Book Now

A daily external therapy using hands-on techniques to unblock meridians and relax muscles and joints.

Tuina, known in antiquity as "anqiao" or "daoyin anqiao," is one of the oldest external therapies in Chinese medicine, with a history of over two thousand years. The practitioner applies orderly stimulation — pushing, grasping, pressing, rubbing, kneading, pinching, pointing, tapping — to specific areas, unblocking meridians, moving qi and blood, regulating the organs, and loosening joints. With no drugs involved, it is a "hands-on, person-to-person" green therapy rooted in an understanding of body structure.

History

Its earliest written record appears in the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon); the Sui–Tang era established a "massage department," and the Ming–Qing period saw specialties such as pediatric tuina. Modern tuina integrates anatomy and sports medicine, developing soft-tissue release and joint-mobilization techniques.

Core theory

Built on meridian and qi-blood theory — meridians are a network, qi and blood are rivers; manual stimulation of points and channels promotes circulation. It also stresses "sinew and bone together": relaxing muscle while realigning joints and posture.

Common techniques

Pushing — straight strokes along meridians/muscles to warm and disperse cold.
Grasping — lift-pinching tense muscle to ease neck/back stiffness.
Pressing — steady vertical pressure reaching deep tissue.
Rubbing — light circular friction to warm and nourish the stomach.
Kneading — thumb/palm kneading to activate blood and loosen sinew.
Pinching — lifting along the spine (spinal pinch), common in pediatrics.
Pointing — fingertip pressure on points to free channel qi.
Tapping — cupped-hand patting to loosen surface and lift energy.

Who it helps

Neck/shoulder/lower-back pain from prolonged sitting; post-exercise fatigue and recovery; relaxation for sub-health, insomnia, and anxiety; maintaining joint mobility in the elderly; and supportive pediatric care (pediatric tuina).

How it's done

Pressure should feel "comfortably sore, not painful"; a session of 20–40 minutes; frequency about 2–3 times weekly or as needed; a warm, quiet setting; avoid wind/cold afterward and drink water.

Avoid over broken skin, acute sprain/swelling, fractures, or severe osteoporosis. Seek medical advice for malignant sites, bleeding tendencies, deep-vein thrombosis, or specific pregnancy areas. For high fever, intoxication, severe dizziness, or chest pain, seek emergency care — do not self-treat.

Tuina is "regulation," not emergency treatment; a systematically trained practitioner is safer. For self-care, learn gentle rubbing and stretching, but never use violent neck rotation.

Suction cups create negative pressure on the skin to promote circulation and dispel wind-cold.

Cupping uses a cup as a tool; by burning, pumping, or steaming out the air, negative pressure is created so the cup adheres to the skin, causing local congestion or petechiae. This unblocks meridians, moves qi and blood, reduces swelling and pain, and dispels wind-cold. Often paired with tuina and acupuncture, it is one of the most widely used folk external therapies.

How it works

Negative pressure mildly dilates or micro-ruptures surface capillaries, forming petechiae; local congestion boosts metabolism and waste removal, while also tractioning fascia to relax deep tissue.

Common methods

Static — cups stay 5–15 min; the most common.
Flash — quick attach-release, repeated; for loose/sensitive skin.
Moving — cups glided over lubricant along muscles; for large back/waist areas.
Blood-letting — brief prick then cup, to clear heat and stasis (professional only).

Who it helps

Shoulder/back soreness, cold-induced muscle tightness, early-cold chills and body aches, fatigue and a "heavy-damp" feeling, and sports recovery.

Timing & sensation

Usually 5–15 min; aim for skin flushed to purplish with a warm pulling sensation, avoiding blisters. Mark color does not mean "how much toxin"; it fades in days.

Aftercare

Pores stay open after cupping — avoid cold showers and direct wind for 2–3 hours; keep warm, rest, and don't re-cup the same spot until marks fade.

Avoid over broken, allergic, swollen, or hemangioma skin. Use caution with bleeding disorders, thrombocytopenia, serious heart or respiratory disease. Forbidden on a pregnant woman's lumbar/abdomen. Avoid during high fever, seizures, intoxication, or when too hungry/full.

Cupping is supportive, not a "detox miracle"; don't overdo frequency — space sessions 5–7 days on the same area; stop and consult a professional for blisters, burns, or discomfort.

Unifying body, breath, and mind — practicing relaxation, calm, and naturalness.

Qigong unifies the "three adjustments" — body (posture), breath, and mind (intent). Through orderly relaxation, breath regulation, and mental calm, it harmonizes qi and blood, settles the organs, and relaxes body and mind. Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, Yijinjing, and the Six Healing Sounds are representative forms.

Three adjustments

Body — correct, natural, relaxed posture as the foundation.
Breath — deep, long, even, fine breathing, gradually from natural.
Mind — release stray thoughts, "as if guarding yet not," reaching calm.

Main forms

Static — seated/lying, emphasizing relaxation and intent (e.g., relaxation qigong).
Dynamic — gentle movement, e.g., Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, Yijinjing.
Standing post — e.g., "roundness" stance or Three-Body, training inner sinking.

Practice tips

Relaxed, calm, natural" is the principle; don't hold or force the breath; don't chase unusual sensations like "qi flow"; keep intent light and progress gradually.

Who it helps

Those who sit long, feel stressed, sleep poorly, are chronically tired, breathe shallowly, or are easily tense; also used as adjunct care in chronic-condition recovery.

Timing & place

Best at dawn or dusk in fresh air; a quiet, wind-sheltered, even spot; loose clothing; practice about 1 hour after meals, never too hungry/full.

Avoid when too hungry/full, intoxicated, exhausted, or emotionally agitated. Those with serious cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, or schizophrenia should practice under medical guidance. Stop and rest — or seek care — if dizziness, palpitations, or chest tightness occurs.

Qigong is about "nourishing," not showing off; learn from a reliable teacher to avoid strain from over-intent; treat it as a 15–30 minute daily reset.
